Afghan Whigs - "Gentlemen". This was an "AP Top 100 Alternative Album" - it's a must-own for any serious devotee of indie-style rock. During the salad days of alternative music, these guys were the crux of the melodic, funk/lounge/emotive scene - great harmony with style. "There's a venom that lines the music and lyrics, and everything is almost masochistically brutal and occasionally just nasty. It's dirty and raw, and filled with a honesty that music rarely has the guts to even try to emote. This is not some angst-ridden whining that typifies what music today offers up for expression. Allerseelen - "Sturmlieder" Very rare and out of print. Allerseelen are the experimental, post-industrial and military pop music works of Austrian musician Kadmon. This album will appeal to those who have artists such as Blood Axis, Current 93 or Death In June already in their collections. Their sound could be categorized as neo folk or apocalyptic folk, it has a vein of dark brooding, nearly industrial sound, with bits of late 1920s Berlin thrown in. Theatrical, and full of dread. According to reviews, "Sturmlieder will be a welcome CD for any who follow innovative avant-garde industrialism. "Storm Songs" dredges the roots of pagan mythology against the materialist towers of modernity with hypnotic and contorted results. Spiritual classicism clashes with the relentless and oftentimes brutal technology of mechanical repetition and squealing noise welding together stark dichotomous montage with esotericism in a myriad of poses. Basement Jaxx - "Rooty" According to reviews, "With "Rooty", Radcliffe and Burton finish the job they started on "Remedy" by listening to their instincts, stripping away the gloss, taking some creative risks, and coming up with some of the rawest grooves in recent memory. Death in June - "Rose Clouds of Holocaust" Very rare and out of print. Regarded by some as the best Death in June album ever released, as well as one of the best apocalyptic folk albums ever recorded. This album features guest vocals from Rose McDowall and David Tibet (both of Current 93). According to reviews, it is "very dark, yet peaceful enough to put you in a trance leading you towards the valley of never never land. It's another work of art that flows well from start to finish, with soothing acoustic guitars, other atmospheric goodies, and Douglas P.'s almost monotone voice - this is not only just a great album, but it's a must have. Garbage - "Garbage" This is the debut album from Garbage. Cashmore has also been a member of the group Current 93 since the late 1980s. Cashmore wrote most of the music for Current 93 after the departure of Douglas Pearce. This CD is a World Serpent release, made in the UK, 1994. It consists of gorgeous and haunting dark folk with appearances by David Tibet (Current 93) and Rose McDowall. Nitin Sawhney - "Prophesy" According to reviews, With "Beyond Skin", Nitin Sawhney set a high bar for global fusion music. Now he's raised it with "Prophesy", taking advantage of a larger budget to bring in Indian strings, a South African choir, a Chicago cabbie, soul singer Terry Callier, and Nelson Mandela, among many other things. Regarded by some as the best Death in June album ever released, as well as one of the best apocalyptic folk albums ever recorded. Cashmore has also been a member of the group Current 93 since the late 1980s. Cashmore wrote most of the music for Current 93 after the departure of Douglas Pearce. This CD is a World Serpent release, made in the UK, 1994. It consists of gorgeous and haunting dark folk with appearances by David Tibet (Current 93) and Rose McDowall. 	Nitin Sawhney - "Prophesy" According to reviews, With "Beyond Skin", Nitin Sawhney set a high bar for global fusion music. Now he's raised it with "Prophesy", taking advantage of a larger budget to bring in Indian strings, a South African choir, a Chicago cabbie, soul singer Terry Callier, and Nelson Mandela, among many other things. But what could have been an awkward grab bag of sound comes together under Sawhney's sure hands and inspired songwriting. He makes the unusual work. On "Sunset," for instance, flamenco and rai meet Brazil, and the vocals of Cheb Mami and Nina Miranda work to glorious effect. Trilok Gurtu contributes some stunning kannakol (vocal percussion) to "Breathing Light," while Natacha Atlas beguiles with her singing on "Acquired Dreams." But this is more than a collection of great tunes - it's an album that ponders the way our world and civilization is developing, asking questions and challenging assumptions while still delivering some sumptuous grooves and melodies.
